Emergency Shelter Programs
The Salvation Army Addictions and Rehabilitation Centre has 21 emergency shelter beds for men who are in need of a free place to sleep and eat. As a key element in the strategy to break the cycle of homelessness, BC Housing's Emergency Shelter Program provides funding to shelters and drop-in centres that help connect people who are homeless to housing and support services in addition to offering temporary shelter, food and other support services. The Salvation Army works within BC Housing's program framework to identify good practices to strengthen the Emergency Shelter Program.
During the cold and wet weather months, The Salvation Army ARC opens an additional 30 Extreme Weather Response mats in its chapel and community dining room. BC Housing's Extreme Weather Response program enables communities to temporarily increase emergency shelter capacity during extreme weather conditions that threaten the safety and health of individuals and families who are homeless. The program funds time-limited, temporary shelter beds needed during extreme weather conditions from November 1st to March 31st.
